Fluffy Cherry Hawaiian Danishes

Description

Soft, pillowy Hawaiian sweet rolls filled with tart cherry preserves and topped with a buttery cinnamon-sugar crust. This easy breakfast recipe delivers bakery-quality results in under 45 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 package (approx. 12 rolls) Hawaiian sweet roll dough (raw dough balls)
  • 1 cup cherry preserves or jam
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon milk or heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Optional: Small cubes of cream cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 13×9 inch baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Remove dough from refrigerator and let it sit on the counter for 10-15 minutes to soften slightly.
  3. Arrange dough balls on the prepared baking sheet, leaving 2 inches of space between each roll.
  4. Using a paring knife, make two parallel cuts in the center of each roll, about an inch long and an inch apart. Do not cut all the way through.
  5. Spoon about 1 teaspoon of cherry preserves into each pocket. (Optional: Place a small cube of cream cheese in the pocket first, then top with jam).
  6. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and milk/cream until smooth.
  7. Gently brush the tops and sides of each roll with the egg wash, avoiding the filling pockets.
  8. Mix the softened butter, granulated sugar, and cinnamon. Brush this mixture generously over the egg-washed rolls and sprinkle any remaining mixture on top.
  9. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown and the cherries are bubbling slightly.
  10. Cool on the pan for 5 minutes before serving warm.

Notes

Ensure the dough is not too cold when cutting to prevent tearing. Leave adequate space between rolls to prevent merging. If your oven runs hot, lower the temperature to 325°F. For storage, keep in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two days or freeze for up to three months.
