Description
A quick and easy comfort food classic featuring savory beef patties simmered in a rich, creamy mushroom gravy. This dish is perfect for busy weeknights and delivers big flavor with minimal effort.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1.5 lbs ground beef (80/20 blend)
- 1 small onion, finely diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 1/2 cup plain dried breadcrumbs
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 8 oz cremini or button mushrooms, sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 cup beef broth (low-sodium)
- 1/4 cup heavy cream
- 1 tablespoon flour
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 tablespoon oil or butter (for searing)
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, diced onion, minced garlic, beaten egg, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper. Mix gently with hands.
- Form the mixture into 6 to 8 oval-shaped patties, about 1/2 inch thick. Lightly sprinkle tops with salt and pepper.
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat with oil or butter until shimmering.
- Sear patties for 3-4 minutes per side until browned. Do not cook through completely. Remove patties and set aside, leaving juices in the pan.
- Reduce heat to medium. Add butter to the skillet. Once melted, add chopped onion and sliced mushrooms. Cook for 5-7 minutes until softened and browned.
- Add minced garlic to the vegetables and cook for 1 minute.
- Sprinkle flour over the vegetables and stir constantly for 1 minute to create a roux.
- Slowly pour in beef broth while stirring to prevent lumps. Scrape up browned bits from the bottom of the pan.
- Add paprika, thyme, and heavy cream. Stir to combine.
- Simmer the sauce for 3-5 minutes until it thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon. Adjust seasoning if needed.
- Return beef patties to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy.
- Cover and simmer on low heat for 5-10 minutes until patties are cooked through.
- Remove lid and spoon extra gravy over the patties before serving.
Notes
Do not overwork the meat mixture to avoid tough patties. Ensure the pan is hot enough to sear the meat properly for flavor. The dish tastes even better the next day as flavors meld. For gluten-free, use GF breadcrumbs and flour. For dairy-free, use olive oil and coconut/cashew cream.
